Creative Brief
For the Fairy Tale Reimagined project, I have decided to reimagine the Greek Mythology story of Apollo and Daphne. Apollo and Daphne get shot by the god of love, Eros. Apollo is shot by a gold arrow, creating a passionate love for Daphne while Daphne gets shot with a lead arrow creating a powerful hatred for Apollo. Daphne prefers exploring the forest and playing sports. Daphne’s father wants her to marry, but she pleads with her father to let her live unmarried. He complies. Apollo chases after Daphne begging her to stay and be with him. Her speed lets her have a consistent distance from Apollo until Eros steps in to help Apollo gain on Daphne. Knowing she will soon be reached by Apollo she asks her father, the river god, to open up the earth to enclose her in. In the original myth, her father does exactly that and Daphne becomes a laurel tree. Against her persistent wishes, Apollo stays with her, and using his powers of eternal youth and immortality makes her evergreen. Explaining why the laurel tree’s leaves never decay. In my reimagined version, I would like to change the ending. Instead of Daphne being swallowed by the earth, Apollo will become a laurel tree. His own powers are why the laurel tree’s leaves never decay. Daphne goes on with her life as a nymph.
The mood for this project will be ethereal. I would like to use a watercolor effect in my work. The children’s book, “Me…Jane” is a perfect example of this mood. The layouts are heavily watercolor-based with lots of layering of color and rich color sprinkled throughout as accents. I will be using Kyle’s brushes to get the effect of watercolor. As for the people in the story I was hoping to create them similar to the people in the book “on the plane”. I would also like to use “The Frog and the Toad” children’s books as inspiration. Overall I will be using the cottage core aesthetic as a great influence in my art direction along with the depictions of nymphs throughout greek mythology art.
